Hacking the MLO Exam
It's no secret that many stumble on their first MLO exam attempt. I went in expecting it to be a trial run, knowing that passing this exam often tasks more than one shot. If you're worried about losing $110, you might be in the wrong field.
Before diving into the world of Mortgage Loan Origination (MLO), you need to ask yourself one crucial question: Why are you doing this? If you’re just chasing the money, you’ll burn out faster than a matchstick. But if you’re driven by a deeper purpose, that’s where you’ll find your edge.
I’ve been guided by my “why” in every career move I’ve made. If you haven’t read Simon Sinek’s Start with Why, you’re already behind. My “why” is simple:
"As an MLO, I have the power to transform people’s lives by helping them achieve one of their most significant dreams—homeownership. This isn’t about filling out forms and cashing checks; it’s about guiding individuals through a crucial financial decision that shapes their futures. My why isn’t just a motivational poster on the wall—it’s the reason I wake up excited to do this work. I’m here to make a difference, not just a profit."
Now, if you’re ready to stop playing it safe and start hacking the MLO, here’s what you need to do:
1. Register for a Class—But Don’t Rely on It
I signed up for THE CE Shop course, but let’s be honest—it’s the bare minimum. If you think this alone will get you past the exam, you’re delusional. This is just step one.

By signing up with The CE Shop and passing the NMLS Exam, you can purchase and fulfill the licensing requirements to expand your license to additional states
2. Reinforce Learning Using YouTube—Forget Traditional Study Methods
Traditional study methods? Outdated. I found Mrs. Articia’s YouTube videos invaluable. While some of her material may be outdated, her teaching style is unmatched and will help reinforce what you already know—she was a legend for a reason. Skip the flashcards and mnemonics; go straight to the real deal.

3. Mometrix Study Guide 2024-2025—Your Nightstand Companion
If you’re anything like me and prefer hard copies, this guide is your new best friend. But remember, it’s a guide, not a Bible. Don’t worship it—use it.
4. Purchase MLOStudyBuddy Comprehensive Course Bundle—And Join the Best Community in the Industry
I signed up for the MLOStudyBuddy course and joined their Facebook group—this is where the real magic happens. Props to Rocco Loguercio for building one of the best communities in the industry. I wish I could have been more involved, but I didn’t have the time or commitment to fully participate in the group or the famous hot seat

5. Practice, Practice, Practice- You've heard it before: repetition is key
Don’t aim for just a 75%; go in with the mindset that you're going to ace it that you are the best. Take every free quiz you can find, and you’ll know when you’re ready.
Conclusion: Stop Stressing—this isn't the bar exam
These steps are all you need to crush the MLO exam. Stop obsessing over study tricks and focus on what works best for you. For example, I hate acronyms—maybe because I come from the tech field, where they’re everywhere. Since I work full-time, time was a constraint for me, so I learned part-time. Here's my final piece of advice: Stay focused, don’t compare yourself to others, and most importantly, stop stressing—it’s just an exam, not the bar exam.
Passing the MLO exam is challenging but absolutely achievable with the right preparation and mindset. Remember, the real learning starts after passing this exam. I hope my experience and tips give you the motivation to succeed. Got questions or need advice? Feel free to reach out.
Until next time
